v  CHAPTER 24

It was on a late Christmas day on December 2043 that Jonas

Arrived to this world; witch to him is perhaps elsewhere

that he no longer has to look for.

Jonas eyes were brightening by the lights in the streets, he

heard people singing in the streets, saying: “merry Christmas

 and hugging each other”.

A drunken old man approached him and asks: “are you okay

son? Shouldn’t you be home with your family?” Jonas stunned

for a second and remembers that the poor Gabriel was on his

back sleeping and they were freezing in the cold. “No, I’m not

from here, my name is Jonas, mister; is there any place where I

could settle for the night?” Jonas said. “Well, son I know   Mrs.

Caroline the responsible of the youth center of this town, you

will find a room there. She is really nice and I’m sure that she

will want you to stay as long as you want. After the old man’s

advice, Jonas and Gabriel went to the youth center.

In the morning Jonas was excited to learn from this new

community, living Gabriel in his bed with the attention of Mrs.

Caroline. This world was full with big objects on four wheels

that where running in the streets. He was used to seeing the

people going to work, students going to school, but he liked the

difference. Jonas felt freedom, “these people have the chance”

he was thinking. Everyone was doing their own thing. All the

sounds; everything was perfect to him at first. It is only later on,

when he saw all the hate between this people, ruled by those

giants machines that Jonas will say “We are not that different

we just have our way in our community.”

Jonas went home crying and believed that this was the most

difficult thing to see. He was confused : “How, in a community

where the people are free, can there be that much violence,

 anger, hates,  hunger ,but

also happiness and great feelings?” He was not going back he

kept on telling himself.

Ø  CHAPTER 25

While Jonas was in the new community, the Giver was in

trouble with his. The people where lost again, just like they had

felt a long time ago when Rosemary left. The Giver was ready,

but more tired than ever. The community was in chaos. “Who is

going to be the next receiver?”,  the community was

complaining about.

Jonas decided to talk to people about his community, how they

were different and alike at the same time. The people never

believed him they told him that the only elsewhere they knew

was planet Mars where rich people actually live on but they are

stuck here because of financial difficulties. Jonas did not give

up!

One day he decided to ask a friend to help him get to talk on

international television. Jonas invited the people as visitors to

his community.  People didn’t believe him, but some of them

joined him to show how crazy he was and to make fun of him.

Jonas was in his mid-twenties and Gabe was about twelve just

like Jonas when he was assigned to be a receiver. The people

from different countries followed Jonas on a long journey to his

community. When they arrived there was nothing to do, the

chief Elder couldn’t do anything about it, they were too many.

The people in the community did not realize that it was Jonas

because their memory was erased. The people were told that

the visitors were all scientists working on a big project and that

they are not to be distracted nor bothered. The Giver was

happy to see Jonas but he had to keep the secret from the

people in the community, orders made by the chief Elder. He

could only stay as a visitor; but Jonas knew that his duty was to

change this belief that the community was better with their

 eyes close.

Ø  Chapter 26

The Giver decided to give his memories by taking his own life,

so he could make a change. The Giver told Jonas before he
died: “I should have done this a long time ago, the community

shall see, feel no matter how harsh it will get, there will be ups
and downs in life, memories are wonderful and you learn from

them, they are experiences. that would be my message for
them and “suck it up” he said smiling. He told Jonas “you are

kind, you are smart, you are brave and you are important! Then
he looked at Jonas and Gabriel, gave them a kiss good bye and

was gone by eleven o’clock at night.

In the morning, Jonas gave a great speech: “the giver is gone
now; before you go crazy, think about this morning, to the

moment when you first woke up, how did you feel about the
person next to you? You probably all felt something call LOVE it

is just a matter of learning from all those fillings to face life but
always think back to that first hour when your eyes were open.

We all play a roll in this world: big, small, yellow, black or white.
From all that you know now it is up to you, every single one of

you to get the best out of it and make a change in our
community. I have been on a long journey and I learned that it

is not a matter of how much freedom you have, I was in a
community no different than ours, people were killing but the

only difference is they knew that it was not a good action and
we do it because this choice was made by someone else we

thought it was a good thing.  They have feelings we don’t. Let
us all make this community a better place for the new

generations coming in honor of Smoy Kenish the Giver, who was
brave enough to give his life and provide us a new

one. Just like he would say at this very moment: “YOU are
IMPORTANT!”

The community approved Jonas ideas and named him the new Elder.

Beep, Beep, Beep!!! An alarm went on, “Jonas wake up! Jonas!”

his mother said, “come on Jonas, time to go to school now.”

Jonas got up and got ready for school. He sat at the table for his

breakfast; he was totally confused this time. He looked at Lily,

his dad and mother and said: “do we still have to tell our

dreams?” Lily looked at him like he had seven heads. His father

said: “Another bad dream son? Poor little boy”. _Jonas: “the

community changed now?” what community you freak?” lily

said, “you are crazy”. “No I just had a bad dream that’s all,

nothing to worry about.” After a kiss good bye, he heard his

mother say those words: “love you son, be safe”. He smiled

looked around and was on his way to school.
